I just graduated college and have a pretty decent job lined up. I'll be making $86,000, plus have a $15,000 signing bonus. I graduated with about 22k in student debt, and have about 8k to my name right now.
My plan was to live at home for about half a year or so, so that I can pay off my student loans and buy a car with cash before going out into the world. With my 8k in savings, I expect to have about 18k day 1 with my signing bonus, just about enough to pay off the loans.
My dilemma is that i'm miserable at my house. I get along somewhat OK with my family, but other people in the house tend to verbally fight what seems like all the time. It causes me a lot of stress to have to hear it all the time. I actually lived at home while commuting to college, so this isn't exactly new, but i'm just finding myself constantly stressed and am starting to think my mental sanity is worth more than saving a lot of money right now. I'm torn though, because "toughing it out" for a couple months could really get me in a great financial position before moving out.
I'm also an insomniac and am pretty worried about starting this job next week. My house is noisy late at night because everyone stays up until about 2 a.m., and i'm pretty sensitive to that noise with my insomnia. At the same time, I'm living rent free, so while I wish my family could try to keep it down (I think it's pretty rude, really) I really am not in a position to complain.
I'm really torn here.
EDIT: I should mention I live in the greater Washington D.C. area, rent is approximately $1700 a month (maybe $1000 a month w/ a room mate).
