Is there any disadvantage to signing up for multiple credit cards to get sign up bonus credits, spending that, then cancelling the card?

What sort of limitations are there on this? Does it mess with your credit rating? (Assume all payments are made on time) And is there any reason this doesn't work?

edit: I'm in Canada, btw.
