This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. When you select a product that you need to purchase, how much do you factor in its ability to be repaired?

For me, it should be a big factor in deciding its value. When I buy boots, I'd like to have the option of having them resoled. For clothing, I'd like the fabric to be able to be re-stitched, darned or patched. I want computers to not solder in replaceable and upgradable parts like RAM or processors.

I understand that it's not always possible and in a perfect world I'd want my BIFL coat to never wear a hole in it, or my appliance to never need a new cord but things just wear out. It's a part of nature. I want the option to repair even if the global marketplace is one where it's not always cheaper to do so. Repairing a high quality product is better than constantly replacing a cheap one.
