If you find yourself with a mess of shoes in the corner and want to sort that out, here's one way.1) go to home depot (or the likes) and pick up at least 3 tubes of the cylindrical cardboard they use to pour concrete to make posts for mailboxes, decking, etc. I used 8" diameter tubes. They probably come in all sizes... 8" was enough to fit high top sneakers so that made my decision easy. You can get more tubes based on what your final design will be like. Skip to the final build pic to get an idea of what i ended up doing.2) If you don't have any paint at home, get some while your at it. Maybe some primer too, couldn't hurt. I did a two tone finish, but you could do it with 1 color if you want.3) Mark the tubes into 12" lengths. I used a sharpie, tape measure, and a straight edge, rolling it along the side between numerous points i measured out around the perimeter at 12" increments.4) cut the tubes along the lines you just made. I tried cutting it with a jigsaw, but the edges just ended up coming out too rough, even with a very fine toothed blade. Instead, I found carefully using a box cutter provided a much cleaner cut - easier to paint over.tubesIf you use the box cutter method, DO NOT TRY TO CUT THROUGH IN ONE GO. That's a great way to increase the chances of slipping and hurting yourself. Instead, use the box cutter like a pipe cutter tool. Youtube it. You should see what i mean.Just to be clear, what I actually did was lightly but firmly trace my sharpie line with the box cutter. It probably took about 4-5 passes around the perimeter of the tube before I actually cut all the way through. This way, you're less likely to hurt yourself (i think so, anyways) and since you're not pressing so hard, you can really get a straight line out of it :D5) ok, so now you've cut a ton of shorter cylinders out from the big long tubes you bought. Hooray. Pat yourself on the back. The worst of it is over. This is where I cracked open a beer and started applying paint. I did the inside coats first. I really should've used primer, but I didn't. I used a bright orange paint and it took like 5-6 coats before the coardboard wasn't showing through anymore. Painfully slow, but i screwed up. If you're using bright colors, do yourself a favor and prime the cardboard.painted insidePro tip - i bought 2 cheap-o paint rollers. One I left as is and used for the outside of the cylinder. Painting the inside can be tricky, but what I found works was to actually bend one of the paint rollers 90 degrees so the rollers axis was parallel to the handle. Made painting the inside of the tube really easy :DOnce satisfied with the inner color, go ahead and paint the outside. Using a dark grey only took 1 coat and it was done. Then for giggles, I used a foam brush, soaked it thoroughly, and intentionally dripped the dark grey paint along the inside over the orange paint for that, i dunno, industrial/graffiti kinda feel. Meh, I dig it.painted outside6) Finally, i used some paracord I had laying around to tie the whole thing together. No screws, no epoxy, just string. Depending on the shape you end up choosing you may or may not need to actually bond the tubes togther - i'll leave that to your imagination.paracord7) Enjoy your new shoe rack :Dtadaa! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2jzVkiV
