In 2023, I contributed $6,500 to my Roth IRA and only realized two weeks ago that my MAGI was over the threshold for contributing anything to my Roth IRA.

So I took the advice online to recharacterize contributions to my traditional IRA and filled out a form saying to apply this recharacterization to the 2023 tax year. Unfortunately, Bank of America has messed up and applied this recharacterization to the 2024 tax year instead.

I called a Bank of America phone number to ask them why this happened and the person on the line said that it may be because I submitted this recharacterization form in the 2024 tax year. Is this a bullshit answer? It should be possible to do recharacterizations for the prior tax year.
