Background: My sister is debating whether she should quit her job. She is in North Carolina. She has been with the same company for 2.5 years (1 year as an intern, 1.5 years as full-time).

For several months, she has been in discussion with her manager about her first promotion. About a month ago, the manager sat her down, notified her that she will be promoted, and gave her an ‘effective after’ date. He even went as far as to individually tell everyone on her team as well that her promotion was imminent. Well, the date was for last week, but it passed by without any word. She reached back out to her manager to find out what was going on. She was then told that the manager’s manager is blocking the promotion, citing a lack of relevant experience.

This (obviously) upset her greatly, given the fact that the promotion date was dangled in front of her this entire time yet no one bothered to communicate that it wouldn’t actually be happening. She felt humiliated and disrespected, and let her manager know as such. He appeared sympathetic, and said he’d “understand” if she were to look for other jobs.

She does not feel comfortable working there for much longer given the way she’s been treated up to this point. Additionally, she has felt for some time that she is not being given enough challenging, substantial work in order to stimulate her growth and development. In her words- she is being given the scraps and leftovers that no one else wants to do.

Her idea is to quit now, live off of her emergency fund savings and find a part time job (Doordash or similar), and actively search for a new job in her field. She is highly qualified and motivated, and the experience she has so far ought to help elevate her above other candidates.

Financial situation details:

Emergency fund has about $10,000.

Rent: ~$1100

Car payment: $320

Gas: ~$80

Food/Groceries: ~$300

Medical Expenses: Difficult to put a number on this, but note that she will be without her employer’s health insurance plan

Any and all advice for the situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit 1: Thank you for the comments so far- I’ve been feeding them to her as they roll in. She would like me to add a couple clarifications. Firstly, her promotion was first abstractly promised back in the summer for October 2023, without a specific effective date, but then was subsequently pushed to January once October rolled by. In January, a specific effective date, as well as a date for a company-wide announcement, were provided to her over IM.

Also, in her company, it is very typical for entry level employees to be given their first promotion within 18 months or less, and she has personally witnessed several of her colleagues with less experience be promoted already.
