Hi, I'm managing my mom's finances and she's retired now into her 80's. I'm going to need to start selling stocks in her portfolio to cover rental costs where she lives. Maybe around $600/month.
Her portfolio has some winners and losers. Most banks and oil companies are in the green and all pay dividends. The losers also pay dividends, but are probably down 40%
There are also two large positions in a Dividend ETF and Total US market ETF.
Looking for strategies on whether it's wise to sell the losers first? Or, You sell on a balanced approach? Maybe some winners, keep some losers if they might bump up? Or, re-evaluate every sale, see if the losers have potential to come back, sell some winners, or a bit from the ETF's?
Suggestions are all welcome. No one really talks about selling stocks when you're into retirement and you need it to pay the bills.
TIA!
