My father passed, he's in Michigan and I'm in Oklahoma.
I have called about 15 different places that do probate. And they all start off with a retainer of $3000. They have all told me to do my own detective work before starting with them. I don't think my father had much. But he did tell a nurse in the hospital that he had just enough set aside for cremation. I don't know how to go about figuring out where he had a bank account or if anyone else is on his manufactured home or car title. Im his only family. He did have a gf who is an addict (not married) living in his home.
He does own the mobile home but not the land.. The social worker said it was in really bad shape because they have 4 animals and they don't take them outside.
He passed away suddenly, He thought he had an ear infection, but it turns out he had ear cancer. We never talked about money or what to do with the property. So I don't think anyone is named on anything but I don't even know how to go about finding anything out, especially since he's in a different state.
The social worker said his gf doesn't want to claim him so there's no push back in my bringing him here. I just don't know how to figure out where he had what, if anything ultimately my goal is just to have his cremation/delivery covered. Plus have his animals rehomed to a safe loving environment.
I'm not sure what to do.
