I’ve been going back and forth on this for SIX MONTHS and can’t believe this is happening.

I stupidly bought a $300 piece of art from an artist’s booth at a popular local street fair. For some reason, I used my debit card. They charged my card and said it would be delivered in 2-3 weeks (couldn’t give me the one on display because it was the only one they had).

A month later, nothing in the mail and no contact from the seller, so I emailed the artist (had to not just look up, but dig, for contact info online because none of the contact info on the card they gave me worked).

He said it would be another couple weeks because he was backed up with orders. Fair, I waited. After waiting for another month, I started trying to contact him again, he never responded, so I opened a claim with Chase. They immediately credited my card with the value while they were looking into it. But then a few months later they undid the credit (recharged my checking account the $300).

Ever since then it’s been countless calls to them, faxing them proof of the receipt and email correspondence (showing the artist said “2 more weeks” and then never responded again), and getting absolutely nowhere.

Last time I talked to them, they said the claim investigation was closed because the seller provided them with proof that they’d delivered the painting. The “proof”, they told me, was a tracking number saying it’d been delivered. I asked to see the tracking number or the correspondence they had with the seller, because I never got a tracking number, never got any indication it had been sent or delivered.

Chase told me the seller told them it must have been stolen after being delivered. There’s no way I wouldn’t have seen something get delivered, so I was baffled that they tried to use this against me. I asked to speak to a manager (I know…). In the most bizarre twist, the manager then tells me they don’t actually have any correspondence from the seller, or proof of a tracking number, and that they’d reopen the claim.

I was so baffled. It’s been a few more weeks since that happened and I haven’t heard anything. I need to call them again but at this point I have no idea what to do or say, this is so upsetting.

Do I have any chance or actual recourse? Can I get my $300 back?

TLDR: fuck Chase
