I have been thinking between buying a new car: Either a Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Mazda3, Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, or a Volswagen Jetta at MSRP and keep it for 3 years before upgrading to an EV
OR
Buying a used car under $5000 and keeping it for 3 years before switching for an EV (planning to put in 10-15k miles per year if I bought used, 15-25k miles per year if I bought new).
Examples of used cars accident free in my area I could purchase for under $5000:
2008 Toyota Camry LE with 195k miles (bad model year)
2005 Toyota Camry LE with 165k miles (good model year)
2004 Mercedes Benz ML350 4MATIC with 160k miles
2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4L with 160k miles
2009 Toyota Corolla LE with 165k miles
2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid with 175k miles
2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 190k miles
2006 Volvo V70 2.5T with 170k miles
2002 Toyota Avalon XL with 145k miles
2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i with 190k miles
2011 Ford Fusion SE with 185k miles
2005 Honda Accord LX with 190k miles
Worst case scenario is that I might rent a U-Haul and carry the used car with me from Boston MA to San Francisco CA and back, but I saw that a cross country U-Haul could be very expensive.
Is it worth it any bit to buy a used sub-$5000 car or should I just skip it entirely and buy a new car (if planning to take trips shown below)?
With these sub-$5000 cars, could it even handle a Summer 2023 road trip from Boston to Palo Alto and back (7500 mi) plus a Winter 2023 trip from Boston to Houston (4000 mi), a Winter 2024 trip from Boston to Miami (3000 mi), a Winter 2025 trip from Boston to Denver (4000 mi), and a potential Winter 2022 trip (this winter) from Boston to Atlanta (2500 mi) or should I carry it with a U-Haul which would be very expensive for these long trips?
