Hey everyone. I’m expecting a job offer in the next couple of days. I’m coming from working for the government, so salaries weren’t really negotiable. I’ve had a few friends move to this company and I’ve compared salaries they received with my experience, time in the filed and have an idea of what I can get.
Here’s the kicker, I’m supposed to get a phone call with the offer, then they will email me the email to negotiate. So, couple of questions:
What do I say during the phone call if they low ball me? Some of my buddies say they got what they were asking for in salary during the initial offer, some say they were 10k low. How do I handle a situation like that?
What do I say in my negotiation email to justify my wanting more, should it come up? I’m thinking of saying something along the lines of due to inflation and previously having a large portion my income being untaxable I would like to see “X” amount.
What about PTO? Is that normally negotiable?
This job would mean a lot of financial freedom for me and my family, I really don’t want to mess it up by asking for the world in negotiations and have them pull the chord, but I also don’t want to enter a deal that doesn’t really benefit us.
Any suggestions?
