I'm a project manager at a small UK based biotech startup. I oversee the only major project in the company and it's going very well. In the time I've been with the company (4+ years), there have been some major personnel changes (chairman's and CEOs stepping down and new executives coming in). Throughout these changes, I've kept the projects running and have been described as "central to the company" and a "linchpin" through these changes.

The company secured further investment required to finance continued trials for product development. I will lead the development program and can now negotiate a promotion. I expect this company will be fairly successful at the end of this product development (with further products in the pipeline).

I'm wondering if it's reasonable to ask for shares in the company along with a salary increase? I have very little understanding of how shares in a private company work and I don't really know where to start... As I understand it, the scientific founders and some on the board currently hold shares in the company.
