Long story short, I owe money to my university (separate from my student loans). I received a letter on November 22nd from Wiliams & Fudge collection agency saying I have 30 days to dispute it, so the 30 day deadline is coming up next week.

I was unable to pay my university - unemployed single mom, they didn't care about my sob story so I'm sure collections doesn't either. BUT I just got hired for a $40,000 salary. Literally just got my first paycheck yesterday. So now I will be able to pay it, but it's too late. My paycheck wasn't enough to cover the full amount, and even if it was, I need to pay other bills. I will be able to pay it in full by my next paycheck, but that is not until December 31st which is after the 30 days. Couldn’t be worse timing, and so nice of them to do this right before Christmas lol.

Is there any way to go about this to avoid ruining my credit? My credit score is 685 and I need to buy a car asap. Should I try to borrow money and pay the balance in full to my university before the 30 days and then dispute it to collections? Pay part of it and then dispute that? Dispute it even though I do owe it? Let it go to collections and tell them I can pay it soon and ask them not to put it on my credit report?
