As a policy, I always look for the free option. Substitutes, freemiums, open source, public libraries, calisthenics parks, etc.

However, sometimes paying a small amount for a membership, service, or product can get you 10x (or more) in yield. The expense pays for itself, many times over.

Examples (with memberships). Costco is great for me when I am in Minnesota or Hawaii. My membership pays for itself because I buy in bulk and use its other services. Likewise, my membership in ACM grants me free access to Oreilly for technical training videos and books (Oreilly is very expensive, otherwise).

How have you leveraged your small costs to yield large advantages?
