I've recently been reading up on the Boglehead investing philosophy, part of which I resonate with - buy and hold, index funds outperform the market in general. Don't chase trends, and no one can really time the market (which is true)
However, I have seen examples of people with knowledge of what they are investing in and good research actually predict and foretell trends with some degree of accuracy, often yielding a good profit. Case in point - if you know pharma, buy pharma wisely, buy low sell high etc. If you know tech, buy tech. (I'm not talking about insider trading, I'm aware that is highly illegal)
It does work, with the caveat that you know the field you are investing in quite well.
I believe these two things to be separate entities, the first being foolish and the second not so. I thought I'd ask here in the search for more knowledge and wisdom.
