You can call up, point to the alternate company's promotion and often get a match or close to it, saving you the hassle of switching. (Or saving you issues if there is some small reason you want the service you have over their competitor.)
This can often save you $10-25 a month.
How I use this: in my house, multiple people work remotely so high speed internet is a must. We have cable & fiber optic in the area, but given how often multiple people are streaming video (video meetings, etc.) we really need the fiber optic one (as cable has noticeably slower upload speeds of up read the fine print - get out advertise download speeds) but I never tell the company this. Two or three times, I've seen a deal from the cable company in the mail that looked cheaper (even if a short term promotional price), so I called up the fiber optic company, said that this looked attractive but I'd rather avoid the hassle of switching so wanted to see if they could match it: they reduced my price to match or close.
