I should xpost this to r/NoSurf too.
I saw a post a few years ago about a pro Soccer player that had a mashed-up iPhone with a cracked screen. I'm pretty sure everyone has seen that one. All about asking why they don't just buy a new one because they're a millionaire. This is it.
About 2 years ago, my Pixel screen cracked and my first reaction was "oh my god this phone MUST be replaced immediately." Although I had the means, I took a step back, thought about that Soccer player, and just told myself that I needed to keep using it until it was absolutely inoperable.
Yesterday my screen met a crack even more that became a safety concern with sharp edges in the cracked glass. I looked at buying a brand new Pixel 5 for approx $900, taxes in, where I live. I asked myself if I should really be spending this money even if I have the means to do so. I'm looking for any reason to use my phone less anyways and I feel like spending almost $1k on a new phone will just make me feel like I need to utilize it to the fullest extent. I want to spend less time on my phone. I bought a $190 Motorola G Play from Costco instead. It does what it has to do. Text, call, I can still use my data. The only downside is the Camera, but whatever.
I'm 30+ years old. I dislike Facebook, want to get off Insta, and have no plans to ever use Tiktok or any other services like that. All I use is Reddit and Relay Pro isn't a CPU/RAM-heavy app.
I feel silly bragging about buying a cheap phone, but it goes to show the expectation and implied status of having a state-of-the-art device.
I get made fun of by my friends for being cheap and saying I'm broke often, but I live comfortably and save well. These same friends complain about never having money or having to pick up OT all the time to make ends meet.
Anyways, just wanted to share the frugal win.
