I'm sure this isn't exclusive to my country. If I order anything, regardless of which fastfood chain/staff/time of day, there's always an attempt to increase the costs.
Say, I order a cheeseburger ala carte. I'm asked, "Do we upsize the juice?"
... what juice? The choice is made for me already that there's juice added, even though I requested ala carte. In an effort to save money, I reply, "Uh, no, just regular." (Tip: if you're actually wanting a drink, specifically request NO ICE or you'll get half the cup your money's worth.)
Then, I come to my senses and ask, "Wait, can we remove the juice entirely?" And they comply.
It's the opposite of "illusion of choice", where instead of an illusion that there is no choice, well, there actually is!
Once the juice is out of the way, I'm asked, "Do we add fries?" or "Do you want a pie with that or a sundae?"
... sorry, what, where are these coming from? I only want a cheeseburger ala carte!
I do not see this tactic anywhere else and again, I don't hate a specific fastfood chain, staff, or anything... it's the strategy of fastfood chains that I hate entirely.
