Accepted my first job offer after college, they want a cancelled check and a copy of my passport.

I accepted my first job offer after college and they sent me an email saying they need a copy of my passport and a cancelled check.

I have no idea what a cancelled check is. I tried Googling it but I still don't fully understand. Also, my passport is expired, is this going to be a huge problem?
