Quick history....car is a 2010 VW Golf with the 2.5L engine. 200,000kms (126,000miles)
While VW said they mostly fixed the timing chain failures on these engines around 07, I guess some still arent lifetime chains, depending on maintenance. Otherwise many say the 2.5Ls are good engines after VW fixed thr issue.
I've owned it for 3 years and have maintained it well for that time but maybe the past owners oil weight or interval of changes caught up with me. Took it to mechanic about 16 months ago where he thought only the upper chain needed work. We fixed it at the time for $2600. I bought the car for $5000.
He did say the lower chain might be needed though which is about $3600-4000 repair as the lower change is labour intensive as its located behind the gearbox. Most people also do the clutch at the same time just cause although mine still feels good.
This car is maybe only worth $5-6k if it was good. I'm hoping if I sell, I could maybe sell it for $1000-15000 to someone who can do the repair on their own to make it worth it.
I dont rely on the car as a daily driver as we still own a Corolla.
I'm just trying to even have a good idea of where to go before even entertaining calling the shop again.
