I was hit by an 18-wheeler and got a rental truck through Enterprise. They gave me the keys around 11:30 on a Saturday after we did the walk-around and I headed straight home to my wife and boy. I grab the booster seat to install it in the rental and realize there's a trim piece missing from the truck. It's a small piece at the bottom of the cab between the cab and truck bed. I recalled hearing a noise immediately after exiting the Enterprise parking lot and merging onto the freeway. so after searching for about 30 minutes on the side of the highway I find the piece completely scratched up and B-line it back to Enterprise. We arrive around 12:30 but they close at noon on Saturdays. When I showed up on Monday and explained what happened, they said they would investigate and get back to me. Then a little over 30 days later I receive and email saying I owe them $425 and they are making a claim with my credit card company.

What does it mean that they are making a claim with my credit card company?

What are my options here with this claim? It wasn't even a quarter mile from pulling out of Enterprise to losing that piece and I took a picture as soon as I noticed the damage. There were cameras at Enterprise to show I was back at Enterprise a little after they closed, but the rep that helped me that Monday said only corporate has access to those cameras.

If we don't pay does this go to collections or is this something they would take me to court for?
