Hey everyone,
I work full time as a salaried employer in the tech industry and have been with the company for over 6 years. Recently my company bought a smaller competitor company and is now downsizing a few departments after the merge. We were all told within a department meeting that we should all update our resumes and portfolios and be on a lookout for the new positions available within the new merged departments. Almost 3 weeks later with no communication in between they release the new positions through email and I applied to a few and had my 1st and 2nd interview with the new managers and directors. Both interviews went very well and to top it all off my previous manager had put a good word in for me.
The "new" positions are very similar to what I was previously already doing for the company except one being a more senior position. But instead of handling projects for just one department, I will be in charge of supporting all the new departments as well. So even though the job skill requirements might be the same, I now would have more responsibilities.
Now I have a few questions and scenarios going on in my head and I need your advice:
- Is it wrong for me to think that I should ask for a big raise once and if they send me an offer? I was thinking to ask for at least 10-12K more per year even though with my level of experience I should be getting 15-18K more if I switched to another company. The reason I'm asking this is because there has been no mention or discussion about the possible pay increase. I just hope they don't think that they could just make us go through with a re-interview and hope that we should be grateful for having our job with the same pay. I am confident in my skills and I know I'm worth the raise. (noteworthy: company has been given yearly 2-3% pay increase since I started).
- This is also around the time of the year where everyone in the company gets their yearly bonus and compensation review. There has been no mention of me getting a bonus even though I qualify for one. Should I also ask for this bonus with the salary increase if I don't get it or just forget about it?
If you are wondering, the main reason I have not jumped to another company yet is because the company as a whole is/was a great place to work for, great benefits, and a very open schedule which allowed me to travel and live a comfortable life. And I partially think that this is the reason I haven't applied to other places yet because I was too comfortable here. However, this experience has ruined the company image for me a bit and I don't know if I will ever feel as loyal to it as I did before.
Have you been through such experience before? Is it crazy of me to think that I shouldn't get paid the same if in their eyes they think it's the same job?
If so, how did you handle it?
Thanks.
