I have recently applied for a job with a remote-first startup. I got through the interviews which seemed pretty normal.
During salary negotiation, the company informed me I'll have to buy a very specific model laptop and phone and I think they are pricier than other alternatives. When I brought this up they said they are the only ones supported by company MDM.
I was told to get them billed under company name and the cost will be reimbursed at $100/month. It'll easily take a over 2 years at that rate.
Essentially I was being asked to buy company equipment which are controlled by company MDM but being paid by me.
I said I have to think about it. I can easily afford the cost but I don't want to end up holding the bill. I saw some posts about fake companies scamming potential "employees" on the pretext of buying equipment. I'm wondering if this is a varient on that. What do you think? Is this a scam?
