Apologies if this isn’t the right sub to try and find help at but i don’t know where else to ask.
Basically what the title says, I come to find out someone’s been using my social security number since I was unable to receive EDD benefits because of COVID last march. At first it wasn’t a major priority to me since I checked my social security activity through their website and it seemed like there wasn’t any recent mischievous activity the past few years, so I believe they just used it about a decade ago. Recently I realize it’s a much bigger problem. I’ve been unable to open new accounts at other banks and have been declined for credit cards since they couldn’t verify my identity. I check my credit report through TransUnion and everything looks fine. However, an error pops up under Equifax when I look at my reports through Credit Karma. I do some more digging and i request a report through ChexSystems. It comes in the mail a few days later and the letter details how it’s been discovered that the Social Secuirty number provided is associated with another individual’s account information and they could not give me my report because of this. I’ve been able to file my taxes just fine through TurboTax despite this, even though I couldn’t file through Credit Karma like I normally do since it won’t let me file or even access my tax documents. I’m due for a hefty tax return due to COVID relief and I’m worried I won’t be able to receive it due to having issues looking up the status of the return on the IRS website. (Despite being able to file and look at the status of my return just fine on TurboTax)
So now I’m wondering what steps I need to take to remedy all these issues. Again, sorry if this isn’t the proper sub to ask for help.
