Frugal for me, means not wasting money on tat and buying what means something to me.
For example, I love to travel (I live in England)
Years ago, I was at work and a colleague was showing of his new trainers. Some top brand , very expensive pair. He made a big deal out of the quality of the stiching, the label, the colour, etc and informed us that his trainers had cost £200 or so. Then he sneeringly asked how much mine where and laughed when I said, they were about £9. But, I added, I would be wearing them while I walked around New York the following week, while he worried about his getting wet or dirty. To his absolute credit, he conceded my point.
To me, it's a no brainer to have the mindset to buy a product for £9 and use the money saved to see the world. What could his trainers do that mine couldn't (other than perhaps last longer) He worked for 22 hours or so to buy those trainers, I worked for 60 minutes to buy mine, more or less.
Each to their own of course, but I have worked with so many people, who hate going to work, yet continue to buy stuff on credit that they don't need, thus enslaving them self further.
