My fiancé’s friend started working for WFG last year. He had zero financial background but they do some short training to get a licence and now he calls himself a financial advisor. He tried sucking us in and getting us to join for a year. He finally got my fiancé’s other friend to join (again, zero financial background). It’s definitely an MLM type structure and when they aren’t trying to convince you to become and advisor they are trying to go over your finances and help you “make money”.
Several of my friends have met with my fiancé’s friend and have invested money in some products through WFG. They love it and say they are seeing good returns (I don’t know what the products are) and they really recommend it. None of my friends are great with finances either, we’re all mid twenties and sort of clueless.
Anyway, my fiancé met up with his friend and came home all hyped up saying we should go over our finances and take WFGs advice. He scheduled us a meeting for tomorrow.
I’m VERY skeptical and hesitant to take any advice from his friend. His friend has no background knowledge or education, I don’t trust the company because of the culty vibes and the structure, and I don’t like that just any old person can be an advisor so fast. I work for an well known insurance company and I already like what I have going on (group rrsp, life insurance, tfsa, etc). I would feel way more comfortable getting advice from a company with a better reputation. My fiancé and I have basically zero financial literally so I’m worried we would easily be taken advantage of. My fiancé also gets sucked into things easily it seems and he seems frustrated that I’m being hesitant.
Has anyone dealt with WFG? Good or bad experiences with them or their products? And what advice would you give us? Should we hear his friend out and then go see someone else and compare advice?
