My 03 VW Golf TDI has been running poorly while at idle (intermittent shaking/shudder that feels like a misfire) Most shops were going to charge $150 minimum just to perform diagnostics. One shops said it could be the injection pump going out that would cost north of $1,200 just in parts.
I purchased a VW/Audi specific diagnostic cable and a license for a software called VCDS for $200 and was able to make some adjustments to the timing and Injection Quantity values. She purrs like a kitten now. It was an expensive tool to purchase but I feel like it saved me 5 times the money and it only cost slightly more than one hour of labor! Should come in handy for any future repairs as well.
