Hi all,
I've been browsing this sub for a while. I grew up in a poor family (like, barely not homeless poor) and to this day no one in my family has savings accounts and no one is financially literate. I didn't learn much and developed some bad habits when I was young that kinda fucked me over and my credit score is shot. But I'm desperate to not repeat that cycle and get out of poverty.
For context: I'm 32/f, single, and I live in the san Francisco Bay area, I've been working for a local school district for around 4 years and they pull money for retirement and match it (CALPERS) so luckily that's out of my hands. I'm a classroom aide (20k a year) and I don't make very much money and usually take a second job in retail. I found someone on Craigslist that lets me rent a room for $750 a month.
Take-home income: District- $1500 a month Retail- $500 a month
Monthly expenses:
Rent: $750 Car + car insurance : $390 Bills, gas, etc: $400 Food: $300
I don't want to live like this working two jobs forever and still not having enough to have my own apartment or have a savings account but I don't know what to do.
The options I do have are to finish my bachelors and get a higher paying job within the school district, but that is difficult when I already need two jobs to make it and no time.
I don't have any skills in a trade or anything like that so I'm not sure that would work out for me.
Just to add to the mess, I have multiple mental health issues that make things much more difficult. Bipolar 2, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. I'm in treatment for these things but they still impact my life. They're disabilities, but not ones that prevent me from working so I don't get disability income or anything.
I feel stuck. If anyone has any thoughts on how I can make more money or have a better savings plan please let me know. Thank you.
