Thought I would share a cool haul I got today for the low price of FREE.
A store I frequent in exchange for money just marked out and tossed about 8lbs worth of snack sized packages of nuts, and you bet I salvaged them. A lot of the time it is junk not worth bothering with, but the nuts have a much longer shelf life than the packaging indicates and they last really long when frozen.
I had just used up my last package of cashews from a salvage a few months ago, so it was good timing. About 6lbs of cashews, 1.5lbs of almonds, raisins, and chocolate, and half a pound of pistachios. The trail mix had an exp date of about september, but I taste tested and they are delicious. The rest expired only within the last week! I dont always bother with foods tossed out because a lot is really junky stuff and very bad for you but I was happy to benefit. In all I think it was at least $100 worth of food. Four big sacks of nuts.
Different people work on the snack section and most dont bother to look at dates, and I honestly dont understand why the expiry date isnt just in the computer system so there is a list. I try to be on top of things because it is nice for people to get food marked down at a discount, but snacks isnt a section I work in, I just try to check the slower moving items and known problem items once a month or so.
Obviously I could technically get in trouble for having done this, which is something I am sure most of you have experienced. And of course the title is on purpose, lol.
