I’ve noticed a trend in a lot of tips and “hacks” where the thing you save money on or the thing you create from an unlikely source is actually kind of... useless.

It’s great in theory - you’re either saving money on the thing you just bought or you just created something new, but did you really save money if you were never intending to buy that thing anyway? And did you really need the thing you just created out of the other thing? I’ve noticed a lot of people online mistake acquiring stuff for “being frugal”, as if having more things=wealth.

I actually think the opposite is true. If you can get by comfortably or enjoyably without needing more things, you’re inherently frugal.

So what’s you most practical tip that allows you to stretch your dollar and create real value in your life?

Mine is saving the ends and scraps from vegetables to make broth. Sometimes I save chicken bones too. I boil the scrap vegetables and bones for a little while, strain them and save the broth in a jar to use when cooking rice. Sure, I can make rice with water but If I have broth, I’ll use it. It makes things better and it’s free because I’m buying vegetables anyway.
