TLDR: leave your thermostat at a warmer/cooler temperature to save money.

Insert your heating or cooling needs in as required for context.

If you leave your heater or AC on at a single temp your system doesn't have to work as hard to overcome a large temperature differential. I compare people with programable thermostats to those who speed between stoplights. You burn so much more energy that way than just accelerating and maintaining a constant speed. (Yes I know there is a difference between heating and speeding)

Personal context: I live in a cold climate and I leave my thermostat at the same temp year-round (18c). Its hot as hades here through the summer and my AC is still set to 18. My gas and electricity prices are fairly predictable and run by monopolies who charge slightly more than the North American average for utilities.

I have tried the programables and have found I save more money with just leaving it alone than wildly changing the temps to suit perceived needs. You're wasting money on the price of a programmable thermostat.

These tend to be pushed by utility companies because you use more energy. They tend to be pushed by municipalities because the energy companies pay taxes on every dollar you spend on utilities.

Do the right thing. Set it and forget it.
