I just moved to a new area and was looking for a new doctor for a mild thing I've been getting treatment for for about a year. I called the closest doctor's office to set up an appointment, and they informed me they didn't accept insurance but that most visits were $60-$100. I said oh ok nevermind because I didn't see the point in paying entirely out of pocket when I have insurance, but then I started to think about all the random bills I get from my current doctor, which is through the local hospital network. I looked at what I was paying after insurance, and sure enough it was well over $100 per visit.
I called back to set up an appointment and they were able to see me the same day (they also accepted walk-ins). I went in and on the wall of the lobby was essentially a menu with all the services they offered and the cost for each service. I saw the nurse practitioner, got the same prescriptions I was getting before, and was charged the exact same price that was shown on the "menu". Not a single penny more. The transaction was complete and I won't be receiving any surprise bills in the mail for it in 3 months. I was in and out in less than an hour.
While I'm tempted to go off on a tangent about how, holy shit, this is how medicine should work and wtf has the insurance industry done to this country, I'm instead just going to say that, even if you have insurance, you might be able to save money by going to one of these cash-only clinics. I had never heard of them before and I could not be happier with the service I got.
