I have timed the market in the past, and done well. That doesn't mean I'm good at it. That means I was lucky.
When this drop happened, I sold before the bottom. Not bad. I sold my remaining positions on the peak day of the bounce. Very nice.
My principle is still there. I still made money. So what's the problem?
If I had simply done nothing at all, I'd only be about $65K below portfolio peak right now. Instead, I'm $133K below portfolio peak.
In order to claw back what I had, I would be forced to take riskier and riskier positions in a time of great uncertainty.
Timing the market. Don't do it.
