Hi Reddit.
I'm a 21 year old college dropout looking to go back to school to get a degree in Computer Science. I am currently living with my parents, but they're asking me to move out and giving me until the end of May. They consider me to be a failure, and rightfully so. I'm looking to make a change and better myself, and I want to be as financially prepared as possible for the next six months.
And so, starting June 1st, I'll be on my own. I've saved up a little over $4,000 which I'll put towards my first term at WGU (one term is six months and costs $3,225). After this term I'll be taking a few months off to save up again for my second (and hopefully final) term.
So on June 1st, I'll have a total of $775 in my savings and the following monthly expenses:
- Rent in Albany, OR = $900
- Student Loans (10 yr plan at 5% interest) = $208
- Health Insurance = $200
- Food = $150
- Car Insurance = $90
- Fuel = $50
- Internet = $45
- Gym/Health/Toiletries = $40
- Phone Bill = $12
- Spotify = $10
TOTAL ESTIMATED EXPENSES PER MONTH = $1,705
By working full time @ minimum wage in Oregon, I'll make $11.25 an hour (about $1400 a month after tax). I'm open to relocate anywhere as long as it's in Oregon.
That means I need to cut my expenses by $300 somehow if I don't want to dip into my $775 savings. I've never had to live on my own before and the whole process is very daunting. Any advice, tips, or criticism is highly appreciated, thanks!
