Long story short about 3 years ago I leased a brand new car that I ended up not being able to afford and it was repossessed after a year. I still owe $8400 on the lease.
I also racked up a lot of debt on a credit card some years back, but I made a settlement with them about 3 years ago and thought I was done with them. Suddenly now after several years they are contacting me saying that the last settlement payment bounced and now I owe them $6k+.
It was a really bad time for me in my early-mid 20s thanks to major depression. I was horrifically irresponsible financially and struggled with work. Things have really turned around though. I recently separated from my husband (a good thing) and got an amazing high paying job. My life is finally coming together and I've really come a long way with my depression. I was feeling daunted about my debt on the car, but hopeful about getting that paid down now that I can afford to make payments on it. However this credit card thing is just too much. Between the lease and the card that's almost $15k worth of debt that's been written off as bad credit and is hurting my credit score.
I'm feeling hopeless and scared. I don't mind paying it all if that's what I have to do, but I need to find out the best way to do it without putting myself in the poor house. Furthermore, my soon-to-be-ex husband is the primary card hold on that CC and he co-signed that lease for me. I want to know if there's anything I can do to make sure my stupid choices don't hurt him anymore. Is that something that can be settled in the divorce?
My credit score is pitiful, but recovering quickly. It's only at 659 right now, but it was low 500s at the start of the year.
Would it be possible to get a loan so I can just get the leasing and credit card company off my back before they start garnishing my wages? Would I even qualify for a loan for that amount with my weak credit score? Please, if anyone can help give some guidance, I would appreciate it so, so much. Thank you.
