My 2014 Subaru Outback burns oil and now might have a catalytic converter issue. I can afford to replace the CC at $900 (though I'm going to try some other things first) but I am wondering if my car has underlying engine issues that have caused a slightly premature CC failure. There was a massive recall for up to 2013 Outbacks for the oil burning, but when I pushed Subaru about it, they were unrelenting that my car was not included despite my protests. I know that I'm not the only one; I've found other people with the same issue.

So, if my other measures don't work and I end up needing to replace the CC, do you guys think I should replace the CC then trade it in? Should I not replace the CC and try to trade it? Or should I just roll the dice and keep it?

My partner's car is much older than mine and should be the one replaced, but my commute is much longer. The other car is a 2008 Camry, doesn't seem to have any issues at this point. I think they both have around 130-135k miles.

Right now, there is a small loan on the Camry (like $5k?) and the Sub is paid off. I really like not having a car payment.

I'm not sure what would make the most sense at this point, from a frugality perspective.
