Regarding battery life a really important tip is to never use free usb ports (like the ones found in airports, buses, planes, kiosks, etc.) to charge your phone. These usually install bloatware and/or spyware that run in the background which are huge battery drains, and in the long run also shorten battery life.
I learned this the hard way and had to restore my phone from backup to get it back to normal. If you charge your phone in a public place always use the actual plug device that goes into an outlet, and plug your usb into that.
