A few weeks ago, I traveled to Denver and booked a rental car with Hertz (not prepaid). As most people know, most rental car companies allow you to reserve a car and pay at the end of the rental with no cancellation fees.

Due to weather my flight was severely delayed and I-70 was closed, so I decided to skip the rental car altogether. Upon receiving my credit card statement, I saw that I was billed for the entirety of the rental! I checked my email and I had received a receipt from Hertz indicating that I picked up the rental, drove the car over 100 miles and returned it the next day (it was a one week rental). Clearly they gave the car to someone else without checking their credit card or ID!

I called Hertz and the (confused) billing department (only open until 4pm PST) reversed the charges. Unfortunately on my latest statement, I found another charge for automated tolls.

tl;dr - Always read your credit card statement thoroughly for unexpected charges!
