OK house grid went down tonight (all circuits nothing worked) figured power outage. I have backup power for basic lighting etc.. so no huge deal wait it out.I get a call back. no outage and we show power to your meter. Check breaker. I trip main and reset. no power.I go out to the pole on their suggestion. there is panel out their as well. since I HAVE a main breaker I assumed that panel was for the neighbor's house not mine. turns out its for mine. it has 2 breakers small and large. no idea what the small one does large one is "tripped" I reset it and house lights up.Problem. its a 50amp breaker. at least I assume that is what the "50" in the little window in the breaker handle means.WTAF why is my house wired with a 100amp panel to a 50amp panel at the power pole??Lady tells me its common need to get an electrician to change the breaker. OK great but first I need to make sure the PRIMARIES coming to the house itself are actually rated for 100amp before I go doing that and can't really afford to just pay for house calls. not even sure if I can afford the cost to change that breaker (no idea what that would cost and whether its as simple as a normal breaker (looks like a normal run of the mill breaker) assuming the wiring is up to snuff.Suggestions? I am competent enough to open that panel without committing suicide. would a picture be enough to tell if I even have the wiring for 100amps?I know I draw well over 50amps a lot. 15amps for the car 10amps for the heat pump 20amps in electric heaters almost 40amps for the water heater plus dryer and other appliances etc..Now I am super concerned about burning the damned house down. 50amp pole breaker 100amp house breaker tickles my WTAF this is not a good thing spidey sense big time. I could draw double the power of that pole breaker without tripping my in house breaker. if that outside breaker seizes closed and the wiring coming to the house is not 100amp rated...... yeah. bad things could happen. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2Oh3iPt
