We've created a society with numerous obligatory gift-giving events throughout the year. It can be nice to remind yourself that within your own home, you create your own culture. My wife and I like eating out, we like travel, and we like saving money. We don't give each other Christmas, Valentine's, Birthday, or Anniversary gifts. We don't even have wedding rings. We just love and appreciate each other every day.
I'm not saying this is for everyone. If gift-giving with your partner enhances your life, then do it. Use money when it adds value to your life. But when you're on the same page and neither of you are interested in spending money to exchange stuff, just remember that you don't have to do it even when society steers you in that direction.
