Hi all. I have been doing a ton of research on parkas and jackets lately. I recently bought the Rab Positron Pro which has 300g of 800-fill down (for $315) because I wanted a very warm puffy jacket under $400...and I’m still cold.
This is one of the highest fill weights I have seen in a jacket and it’s STILL not enough to keep me warm and it’s only 36 degrees F out now, so it definitely won’t work for a Midwest winter. I’m very confused because the reviews are all “wow this jacket is even too hot for above freezing!”, but I’ve also heard down only keeps your warmth, and doesn’t produce it. I had a t shirt, button up, as well as a down vest underneath!
The only jacket I can viably see working is the Eddie Bauer Peak XV, which is a huge jacket with 350g of 800-fill down, but it’s only 50g more down so is it really going to cause a LOT more warmth?
I tested the Eddie Bauer Superior Down Parka in their 20-degree test room and it felt a bit warmer than my current jacket, so maybe I just have to suck it up and buy a heavy parka. I just like the mobility of puffy light jackets, but so far, they aren’t keeping me warm. I had the McMurdo III and liked it, but it was SO heavy.
Side note: I am someone who is absolutely comfortable and doesn’t overheat in 105 degree weather, so clearly my body is just WAY too good at cooling down and doesn’t know how to be warm...so I’m wondering if that’s why my experiences with “super warm” jackets aren’t quite as expected.
Thanks for any advice, I’ve already exhausted the winter clothing thread. Does anybody else relate? I’m also pretty skinny but I’m not a twig.
