I run a commercial construction company. I do everything. When my boss is on vacation for weeks the company runs effortlessly, much less stressful than when he's around and I have to spend hours explaining a simple e-mail to him. I bid the jobs, I order materials, I manage finances/booking, I manage legal/tax matters. I go through drawings and have 100% understanding of the projects. I'm physically present as a project manager on sites. My boss is a 64 year old man with no education or understanding of business and taxes. He complains about working 3 days a week just standing around job sites watching others work. I'm sick and tired of seeing him making 7X more than I do annually. He always says I'd get a bonus for bringing in business, but every job we've got for the last two years I've personally bid on my own and haven't seen anything other than a standard annual bonus.

I truly believe I could run a much more profitable commercial construction company on my own, but I'm a 30 year old female with limited capital. How do I show my boss that I'm MORE than an equal partner in his business and want to be treated as an equal partner at the very least? I'm glad to be getting a steady salary but can't help but think I'd be getting stupid rich on my own. Is there a way I can convince my boss to give me a partnership? He's already named me in a succession plan to take the company when he dies since his family isn't interested in it. But he has zero plans to retire. I don't know how much longer I can hold on. Is it worth it or should I just forge my own way?
