I got my first year home warranty for "free" paid for by the people I purchased the house from. I say "free" because I had some damaged ductwork that wasn't allowing hot air to one room, called home warranty, the company came out and said they would call back and make an appointment the next day. Paid $75 to call this company for an entire week after, then contacted home warranty because the HVAC company wasn't returning my calls. Low-and-behold the HVAC company told my home warranty that it was animal damage which isnt covered by home warranty. Fair enough, but why did the service man not tell me that it was animal damage while he and I were both at my house during his inspection? This HVAC company also ONLY works with home warranty companies so sounds pretty lazy to me! They called me today to renew my yearly plan and I straight up told the lady "I'm pretty sure home warranty is a scam, even if it's not your company that's scamming people, the company's you are working with are scamming people and you are guilty by association." Screw that. I'd rather save $50 a month especially if they're just going to screw me over! After the call I looked up what Dave Ramsey would've said to them and luckily we were on the same page about it. Lol.

I understand a lot of people have had good experiences with home warranty for the one year things went wrong. And yes, I had only one bad experience, but in the long run if you think about $50-$100/month for years on end, that's hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a few appliances fixed one crummy year when everything went wrong when you could've paid maybe a few thousand to ten thousand to get it all fixed and then pocket that monthly payment.
