TLDR: whats recommended way to secure 2x4 to shelf piece thats 3/4" thick and other side of shelf will not be visible?Im hacking together some ikea bookshelfs into a recessed area in a room, trying o make it look like built-in shelves. Theres a roughly 4" gap from the top of the shelves to the top of the recessed area that will be covered with crown molding so I plan to attach pieces of 2x4 to the top of the shelf to give more "meat" for the crown molding to secure to.So now to secure the pieces of 2x4 onto the shelf I plan to shoot some 2" 18 gauge nails (i only have 18g nailer) through the shelf and into the 2x4 on the other side and then caulk up the holes. Any better suggestions of how this should be done?
