My wife's AMEX was stolen. Thieves attempted to use it at Macy's a few towns over. It was declined. How TF did they know?

As stated, my wife CC's fell into the hands of the bad guys.

They attempted to use it at Macy's a few towns over, the charge was for ~$550.

That could easily have been us, how the heck did AMEX know this was a fraud and decline the charge and alert us?
