Here's the backstory:
My dad was a middle-to-senior manager at a Chinese tech company that was recently more or less banned to do business with US entities until he was laid off. Before anyone says good riddance, please know that my parents came to this country in the 80s, each worked 3 jobs while my dad went to uni and got his degree. Unfortunately, there was no financial capability left for my mom to do the same. Fast forward to a couple years ago when my dad was laid off by a major US tech infrastructure company due to cost-cutting, he got picked up by a Chinese competitor. Their American HQ was in the Bay Area so we settled there and bought a house (the smallest in the neighborhood because that's all we can afford).
Anyway, long story short, due to recent government policy changes, my dad was kicked to the curb for being an American citizen and now my parents are left with no insurance and stuck having to pay $7000+ in property a month (including tax, mortgage, mortgage interest) just for living close to where my dad used to work. With no income and only one person with an education, what is the best course of action? Dad's been going on interviews, but nothing has panned out for him due to age (and I suspect some other forms of discrimination).
