Every time I bring up “oh yeah I do my own oil changes/brake jobs on my car because it’s pretty easy and parts are cheap” (just one example, I try to do as much as I can on my own, in my opinion being able to do things yourself can not only cut costs but also give you experiences to learn from) Or “I found this deal online, it took a while to find the best price but I saved this amount of money on this item or service”
I always get a response of “well the time you spent doing that you could’ve made more money at minimum wage, so it’s actually not worth it”
Several people say this.
Is this just an example of others justifying what they pay for service or what they pay for items?
Because that’s not how opportunity cost works as far as I’m concerned, especially when I don’t have an opportunity for paid overtime at my job. Therefore, any amount of my time working to eliminate cost is better than the alternative of simply making the same amount I consistently do at my job. If I’m correct in my thinking, it’s literally save money vs nothing.
The equation would be different if I could’ve used that additional time of mine to get overtime at time and a half or something, even after that it still comes down to how much I value my own time.
