So I bought a house April 15th.
One thing I have learned is to be patient with what you need to buy.
Instead of impulsively buying a bunch of tools here's what happened over the course of the last 3 months
- Got a free push mower from my dad
- My father-in-law gave us the door knobs from when they bought their house so we didn't need a locksmith to re-key the house
- My friend gave me a gas powered mower since he moved to Cali and didn't need it anymore
- My dad gave me a trimmer since he wanted a smaller one
- My father-in-law gave us a blower since he bought a new one
- My wife's uncle gave us a barely used snow blower that he can't get going since I think he left the gas in it for too long (hopefully it will be revived by me)
I also check out the flea markets and local goodwills for tools instead of buying brand new.
I can't imagine what it would cost to buy all this new so I think it's a good approach.
Sit back, make a list and see how urgent you need it. If it can wait, it can wait. Try not to impulse buy as easy as it is.
