Generally there are two types of office / desk / computer chairs:

  • normal / gaming chairs you'd buy at the likes of Walmart which might look nice but become uncomfortable over long periods and quickly fall apart
  • office chairs bought by businesses to protect themselves against lawsuits from fatties or people with specific ergonomic needs

If you browse /r/BuyItForLife you'll want the latter. These generally don't sell well to the public because they're costlier and uninformed consumers expect more gimmicky features at those price points, but you can still find them.

Remember a comfortable chair is a chair you don't think about. After years and years of searching for a reliable chair I had the great epiphany that I already spent most of my day comfortably sitting on one at work. I got this exact chair and haven't looked back.

The most important thing is to get something which constantly pushes against your lower back. The biggest plushiest chair you can fully recline in with a headrest / armrests might not be your best bet. Sometimes less is more. You don't have to spend a fortune.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to work this out, and I wish someone had explained this to me sooner, so I hope this helps someone.
