Hello, not sure if this is the correct subreddit but I need advice. So the story goes I fractured my tibia and needed to see an orthopedist, so I used the website Zocdoc to find an orthopedist in my network. I found one, and after scheduling the appointment I get a call from that doctor’s office telling me that they’re in fact NOT in my network. So I said okay and canceled the appointment. However, about a day later I get another call from the same office and it happened to be the orthopedist himself, and he tells me that there was a mistake and they actually ARE in my network. So since the doctor himself told me that he is in my network, I then reschedule the appointment and see him, where he examines me and recommends an MRI which I got at a separate radiology office and paid for with a copay. However about two months later, I get a bill from the doctor’s office saying that I owe almost $5000. I call my insurance and they say that they have no records of these services, and that I should call the doctor’s office. So I did, and they told me that they’re not in my network (which is why i’m being charged in full), so I told them about how the doctor told me that it was fine. Now they want me to wait until next week when the doctor is in so I can call and speak to him directly.
So my question basically is what can be done in this situation? Am I at fault? I’m only in my early 20s and I clearly don’t know how this works. What would I even ask for when I speak to the doctor? For anyone who replies, thank you in advance for reading this and for your help.
